project #7 (color lighting)

project 8

1. What did you pick to do your project on? Explain why you chose it.
i picked black and white portraits for this project. The reason why i did it was because i wanted to get more serious images that didn't have so much color everywhere. I love black and white images and last time i had pictures in b&w was sophmore year. Looking back and them made me want to see how much i've improved in taking pictures because the last ones are complete trash.
2. What did you do to get the image? Explain.
i had to set up 2 c stands. I had a warm lightbulb and a brighter one to get a little more dramatic lighting. I had to pose my models because i also suck at posing people and i need a lot more practice. The camera was messed up and my pictures would come out to bright so i had to mess with the lighting until i got the perfect light that i wanted.
3. What editing did you have to do to your images? Explain why they needed that kind of editing.
i blurred out some imperfections that the models had. for example destiny had green marker on her hand so i took it out because it looked weird. I obviously converted my image into B&W and from there i started editing more. I brought the contrast up and lowered the brightness down a bit so that my models would pop out more. I messed around with the levels and curves so that i could get more light in my model and a much darker background. When i made the background darker i ended up with some shadows and i liked that a lot.
4. What did you learn about this kind of photography by shooting it? Explain.
i learned that i need good bright lighting so that when i made them black and white they would stand out more. I also learned that it is much easier to get that dark background i wanted in the blackbox. I also learned to adjust my camera to the perfect setting to get good lighting. i use to think that it was because i wouldn't set up the lights in a good spot but i figured out that i also had to set my settings.
5. Was there anything you found difficult about creating these images? Explain why.
at first it was just getting the lighting. the images were too bright at first and just looked awful. once i figured that out creating the rest was easy.
6. How do you think they came out overall? Could they be better? Why? Explain it.
I personally think they came out good. I haven't had much practice in the blackbox. i always shoot outside and i think now I'm starting to like the balckbox a lot more. Maybe my editing could of been better, and getting different poses would of been good and added more quality.
7. What are you thinking about doing for your next independent project? Explain your idea.
for my next project I'm planning on having an arcade photoshoot. having those lights will help me get more practice.

After Questions
I decided to pick family portraits. The reason i did it was because my sister has been bugging me about taking pictures of them again. I went down to visit them and i took the opportunity to do it and make it a project because it actually took a lot of time and effort.
What i did to this image was change the brightness, brought up the contrast and just fix some simple details to make the images more vibrant. I was going to crop the images but it wasnt necessary anymore because then there was less of the cotton field showing. The main point of the images was that they wanted the background to stand out with them. I had to set up my camera to a good setting. A lot of patience was required because its hard getting the kids to look at the camera and pose. The one where it was all of them together i was waving toys around so that the 2 youngest would look.
What i learned about this style of photography was that i really have to look at the weather if i want to shoot outside. The images also came out better when the sun was setting rather then when it was more out. The pictures came out with the perfect lighting and i didn't have to move my settings around as much. Another thing i learned to do was how to entertain kids while having a photoshoot.
There wasn't too many difficulties, the only one was posing the kids. Bruce is a very energetic kid and doesn't like being held still in the same position for more that 30 seconds. I had to find out different ways to keep him entertained.
overall, these images came out good. The best ive ever shot with multiple people and outside. I really loved the cotton field and they came out better than i had imagined.
for my next project i am planning on taking pictures of my cousins daughter. Maybe ill make it like a kids theme and have different kids in my images.

After Questions
1. I picked a maternity photoshoot because i wanted to try something different. It was also during fall and i was super excited because of all the colors from the trees. I think maternity shoots are very big and if i ever do make something out of photography i feel like i should have experience doing it.
2.What i had to do to get these images was knowing how i was going to pose them. i tried using a tripod but i ended up taking the camera off becuase i found it much easier to move around without it. I had to also find good spots to get the pictures i wanted.
3. I'm not very big with editing because i sill suck at it. I also didn't have much access to editing because when i shot these images i was on vacation with my family, so i didn't have photoshop on my laptop. I never planned on using these images as a project but i ended up using them. I did bring up the contrast up a bit but that was mainly it.
4. I learned that i need to have more poses in mind. I looked at pintrest for ideas to get different pictures and not have so many repetitive shots. I also learned that making the models look affectionate towards eachother gives the images seem more meaningful.
5. It wasn't difficult shooting these images. It was a lot easier than i imagined. I did struggle in thinking of how to pose the couple. I looked on the internet for some ideas and it fixed my issue. I also tried some things that i imagined would look nice, but some didn't work out.
6. Overall the images came out good. They could of been a lot better if i took the time to really edit them. Even without so much editing they came out good and i was satified with my work.
7. For my next independet project im thinking of doing landscapes. I love nature shots and thats what i tried doing first ever since i got into photography and i would love to get back into that and improve in that style of photography.
